Sharing ideas within the LLI community

First LLI Manassas Blog Post

Good afternoon LLI,

Over the holidays I have spent a great deal of time reading. One of the books I have been reading is The Stuff of Thought by Steven Pinker. The book is a fascinating look at language and the way that it effects our thinking. I ran a cross a quote from Mark Twain: “The trouble with the world is not that people know to little, but that they know so many things that aren’t so.”

It occurs to me that this is one of the purposes of LLI - to challenge what we think we know. The instructors and facilitators engaged by LLI attempt to challenge us by introducing new topics/subjects for our consideration. We must constantly grapple with changing circumstances, events, and ideas to enable us to better understand not only ourselves but the world in which we live. There are no pat answers. Things are much more complex than what we think we know.

I am proud to be part of an organization that continues to strive for knowledge and dedicates it self to learning  “as if we are to live forever”.
